• From 1896 to 1918 he served in the Navy as a chief petty officer. Later he was employed as a millwright at Campbell, Wyant and Cannon Foundry Company until 1931, when he retired.768

• From enlistment registers 1889 [sic] [1899?], Willie August Zellar enlisted on August 1, 1899 in Chicago for 4 years. He was rated a landsman. He served on USS Independence, USS Hartford and USS Massachusetts before 1900. A notation on the register indicates he may have served with the Michigan Naval Militia (National Guard) before his enlistment in the US Navy.788, p 2
