• We moved from Evanston when I was a little kid. Before Bud was born. So I probably was less than two years old. We moved to Park Ridge. And Gert was two years older than I am. My sister.64
• So how did you get to be a nurse, then?
F: Well, I wasn’t a nurse, I was a physical therapy technician. But I started out in the hospital, see I was working at Bullock’s and I heard about this job...this was before we were married...I heard about this job at the hospital, Gert or her friends told me about it, they wanted a receptionist in the physical therapy department. So I applied for it and got it. Very soon the physical therapy people were having me do all kinds of jobs. I wasn’t at my desk half the time. I was off running the water here, getting somebody’s whirlpool bath ready, and they’d say, “Oh, will you watch this patient while I go do so and so.” So I’d watch the patient; we could take the electrodes off and we had diathermy and all this stuff. One Swedish lady who was a masseuse taught me how to give massage. So I was giving massage.
M: No wonder you were so good. (Laughter)
F: And then, I thought, well gee, if I’m going to really do this, I need to get some credentials. I didn’t just want to be an impostor here. So I asked the people in the office if I could have time off to go to, I guess it was PCC then, to take physiology and anatomy and things like that. So I did. I still worked, but I’d take time off to go to these classes, and then I’d work.
M: Was this before you were married?
F: Yes, and, ah, I guess this was before I was married, no, it might have been afterward, but, see, when I lived in South Pasadena for a couple of years (on Mound) and then we moved up right close to the hospital, because we found an apartment up there. And then Daddy started having patients in our home. We had an extra bedroom, we had a two bedroom apartment, so he started having patients at night in our home, because in the daytime he was learning to be an eye, ear, nose and throat doctor. He was working for another doctor in Los Angeles, and he had to go into Los Angeles everyday, on the big red car. Then I would take...we only had one car...and I’d take the car and go to these classes and things, then I heard of a school in San Gabriel where you could get a credential for being a physical therapy technician. There classes were from 5 to 9, or 5 to 10, or something like that at night, so that worked out fine with my job because I could work all day, and then I could go to class at night. And so I got my credential from them and then took the National Board and passed it. So that’s how I got to be...I didn’t go to any, you know, place like...well, I went to SC night school one year and took physics, of all things. I think I was the only girl in the class. I was just avid to get some education so that I could do something different, you know, and get a better salary and help us out. So that’s why I did all this, and I like going to school, I’ve always liked going to school. So I liked all these subjects that I took. I liked the physiology and anatomy and all that stuff. And I did well in it. So then I became a full-fledged, and I got my little pin, it was a national credential thing, and I could hold my head up then as a [garbled] physical therapist, and I had my own patients that came. They all had to be recommended by a doctor. And I worked right there at the hospital, and I was there for ten years in that same place. That’s why we didn’t have kids, you see, until I was thirty, I guess, when I had Kris. I worked all the time. By that time Daddy had worked up a practice and we moved back down to South Pasadena, and lived on Fair Oaks.64, pp 9-10
• I was back the whole year. I went as soon as school was out, as soon as I graduated, and I stayed until...when their college was out, and they were all coming home from college. And of course they would tell me all about college and made it sound very interesting, and I wanted to go to college, so that’s why I decided to go to UCLA64, p 7

A recent issue of the Pasadena Star-News features a delightful half column with cut on the noteworthy accomplishments of Mrs. Hoyt F. Martin. Mrs. Martin is a Gamma Phi Beta, a native of Evanston, Ill., a graduate of UCLA, interested in reading German and Scandinavian works, is mother of two delightful small daughters, she swims, designs and sews; before her marriage to our Hoyt, was a physical therapy technician by profession. The article emphasizes that her particular line of accomplishments fittingly portray the ideals of Gamma Phi Beta. What Ho Hoyt? Charity fund?66
• [excerpts] The fact that she named her elder daughter for Sigrid Undset’s medieval heroine, Kristin Lavransdatter, is proof that Mrs. Hoyt Martin, president of the Pasadena alumnae of Gamma Phi Beta, counts reading as one of her more absorbing pastimes. Of Swedish and German descent, she is particularly interested in literature relating to the Scandinavian pioneers in the Middlewest.83

This has been a rough year for me with the loss of Hoyt in May and my brother in September. I have undergone 3 surgeries since March and am still recuperating, but I thank God for leading me through the sale of our home and my move to Sierra Bonita Towers, a retirement home in Pasadena. This has proven to be an ideal place for me, since Kris lives in La Canada and Gretchen lives in San Marino. They have been very supportive and I am grateful for their love and attention.
My 6th floor apt. looks out at the mountains and I find great contentment here. I eat in a large dining room twice a day and find myself involved in many activities, as well as forming close friendships with other residents. Though I miss my loved ones I consider myself fortunate to be so blessed. I look forward to a better 1986 and trust the coming year will be good to you also.

• Suffered stroke on Wednesday, August 28, 1996, the day that Margaret and Andy arrived from Kenya. Non-responsive as of Saturday morning, August 31.
On Labor Day, September 3, 1996, she was transported by Gretchen and Margaret via car from Pasadena to Desert Forum rest home, Peoria, Arizona.
Dave, Gretchen, Margaret, and Andy visited her on Sunday, September 8. She can respond to questions through facial expressions.
Gretchen and Dave visited her on Saturday, September 14. She recognized both of us and took a little food by mouth. She seemed to be in some pain. Kris and John visited her on Sunday.The doctor gave her morphine and she died on Monday. Dave was in Rochester, New York on business at the time.
• Immediate Cause of Death: Malaise and total system failure, due to or as a consequence of Coronary Artery Disease and congestive failure.78

Florence Hawkins Martin, who lived full time at Lake Arrowhead from 1975 to 1985, died Sept. 16 in Arizona at the age of 88.
Born Dec. 28, 1907 in Evanston, Ill., she moved with her family to Pasadena, Calif. She graduated from Pasadena High School in 1924 and attended University of California, Los Angeles. In 1929 she married Hoyt Fellows Martin, a native of Pasadena.
Florence and Hoyt, along with friends and relatives, frequently camped on the shore of Lake Arrowhead near Orchard Bay in the 1920s. After spending many summers at Lake Arrowhead at the Martin’s house on Palisades Drive, they became full-time residents after retirement. Florence was active in Lake Arrowhead Community Presbyterian Church.
She lived since 1985 in Pasadena, where she taught a Bible study class before suffering a stroke in August.
She is survived by two daughters, Kris Schuehle of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Gretchen Mills of Carefree, Ariz; five grandchildren: Neil Schuehle, Jennifer Stradling, Samantha Schuehle, Margaret Andersen and Nelson Mills, and three great-grandchildren.86

She smiled as she crossed the border from California into Arizona. At last Florence had come to reside in the state where her two daughters had moved. She enjoyed living close to Kris and Gretchen, but leaving the familiar surroundings had not appealed to her at age 88 until a serious stroke necessitated the move. The beautiful surroundings and excellent care were not long to be enjoyed, however, as Florence Martin went home to be with the Lord on September 16, 1996.
Florence Hawkins Martin, born December 28, 1907 in Evanston, IL, moved with her family to Pasadena. She graduated from Pasadena High School in 1924 and attended UCLA. In 1929 she married Hoyt Fellows Martin, a native of Pasadena, who lived across the street from the Hawkins family on Rose Villa Street.
Her work in the physical therapy department at the Huntington Hospital preceded her 25 years of service with Camp Fire Girls, from which she retired as Executive Director in 1975. Florence was also active with Gamma Phi Beta sorority, affiliated with Alpha Iota chapter at UCLA, serving as advisor to Beta Alpha chapter at USC and a Convention Chairman and International Vice President.
After ten years’ residence at Lake Arrowhead where she was active in the Presbyterian church, she returned to Pasadena just fifteen minutes away from her daughters. Since 1985 she has resided at Sierra Bonita Towers, a retirement apartment where she taught a Bible study class before suffering a stroke in August this year.
She is warmly remembered by her two daughters, Kris Schuehle of Flagstaff, AZ and Gretchen Mills, of Carefree, AZ; five grandchildren, Neil Schuehle, Jennifer Stradling, Samantha Schuehle, Margaret Andersen, and Nelson Mills; and three great grandchildren, Daniel, Katherine and Kimberly Stradling.80

Thanks you so much for your provocative letter. I am honored that you take me into your confidence letting me what progress you as a Christian are making in this God-less society. I feel sure you are growing in your Christian faith but God asks more of us than personal growth. He wants his followers to make disciples of those we come in contact with. You say, “without a common desire to honor god I have nothing in common with other people.” Your relationship with God-less people will not necessarily fail if you stay steady in your faith. Many non-Christians are won over by association with true believers. This sometimes is a slow process requiring patience, courage and perseverance for the Christian to prevail, but is always worth the effort. Don’t expect all of the friends you meet to be ready made Christians, for the world is full of non-believers. I believe God has a purpose in throwing us into the melting pot to test our faith and even to convert some of the friends.
Being a Christian is much like being a parent. The greatest lessons are taught by example. The possibility of failure and discouragement are bound to creep in but the Bible tells us to be courageous.
Deut. 31:6 says, “Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or terrified, for the Lord, your God goes with you. He will never leave or forsake you.”
Ezra 10:4 says, “Rise up, this matter is in your hands. We will support you so take courage and do it.”
James 11:12 says, “Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him.”
I am happy to hear that you want God to be in charge of your life. I’m sure he will be but in the process never underestimate the spiritual skills He has already provided for your growth and development. You are blessed with health, a good mind, intelligence and a family who loves and cares for you. Always be grateful for those assets, as well as the monetary advantages which allow you to explore another part of the world.
Be patient as you wait for God’s answers and keep striving to use your advantage for the greatest good.
As far as serving God goes - this can be done on a daily basis no matter what career we have in life. If all lawyers and doctors became Christians tomorrow, many of our problems would find solutions at once.
Yes it was great to have a conversation with you on Easter. I was totally surprised at that great happening and talking with you produced healing results. I am fine now and back to, ‘life as usual.’

Attended UCLA. Graduated from Southern Calif. School of Physical Therapy and worked as a Physical Therapist at Huntington Memorial Hospital until 1940, when Kristin was born. Prior to Kris’ birth, Hoyt & Floss built a house high atop a hill in So. Pasadena. Gretchen born 1942.
Became a devoted wife, mother, housekeeper, gardener, seamstress, etc. for about 7 years, when she became interested in her national sorority, Gamma Phi Beta, which she had joined at UCLA.
Also a renewed interest in Camp Fire Girls crept in when Kris became a Blue Bird. While the girls were growing up, time was divided among various interests, but Gamma Phi and Camp Fire seemed to capture most of the interest.
International Vice President of Gamma Phi for 2 years and six years membership in CF [Bdy?] Dir. with President of Council; National Council member - among contributions.
In Aug of 1958 accepted position of District Director for San Gabriel Valley Council of CFG and went to Peaceful Valley, Colorado for a three week training course. 1 yr. later offered position of E. D. [Executive Director] and have held position ever since.
Soon we were evicted from our headquarters in the city Park. We were housed in an unsatisfactory old house when we found our present site.
1962 - both girls married - one in April, one in December. Then Hoyt & I flew to Tahiti. Trips include Mexico, Yucatan, Cozamel, several trips to Hawaii; several trips to New York, New England, and a month long tour of the Orient and South Pacific including Australia, New Zealand and a second visit to Tahiti.
Both girls were members of CF from Blue Birds through Horizon Club and both served as counselors at Wasie [Camp Wasewagon in the San Bernardino mountains].
The Martins have a house at Lake Arrowhead which has been enlarged to accommodate the extended family and spend as much time as possible enjoying the Lake and its surrounding beauty.76

This year we haven’t had to wait for Christmas to bring joy to our hearts - Our hopes and aspirations started early when Jennifer announced she was carrying identical twin girls. You may remember that Daniel had been born in April 1990 and was still the family’s pride and joy and as handsome as his father, David Stradling, and as active as an Olympic hopeful. The birth of the twins came a bit early - September 29, giving great grandmother Florence one more reason to keep on living. Katherine and Kimberly are doing just fine and are, of course, adorable.
Kris and John Schuehle surprised us all by building a sumptuous new home in Forest Highlands, a gated golf course community 6 miles out of Flagstaff, Arizona. I have made my one and only visit because the altitude of 7,000’ doesn’t agree with my high blood pressure. Samantha is ready for college and Neil is doing well in the Marines.
Gretchen and David Mills have been trying to keep up with their children by doing a bit of traveling, including a trip to Tanzania, Africa to visit Margaret, and another trip to France to visit Nelson who is on a USC program in International Relations and has spent time in Paris and Washington D.C. Margaret is presently visiting in California but will return to Tanzania the first of the year to continue teaching children of missionaries.
I’m still driving my car but only on short runs around town. The Bible class I continue to teach as well as my sewing keep me in touch with the needs of others, while my constant exercise and walking keep me in good health. I thank God for my precious growing family and for the constant companionship of friends. Life is slowing down for me but isn’t it about time? Do have a joyful and blessed Christmas.90

F: Oh, well after he left Caltech, he went to medical school in Los Angeles and became a doctor, and he graduated before we were married. And we were married after he graduated, about six months afterward. That’s when we moved into the Mound Avenue house. But until then, he lived with his parents on Rose Villa street, and I lived with my parents, and we moved several times. We lived up in Altadena, and then we moved down to South Pasadena...South Pasadena Avenue, Pasadena.64, p 9

I’m so happy tonight, dear. You certainly helped to make my graduation a complete success. I’m so tickled & pleased with that beautiful sweater & that sterilizer that I don’t know what to do or say. Thanks, Florence dear, with all my heart. I’m one of the most fortunate boys in the world with such a sweetheart as you. I’m so much in love with you that I don’t know how to express myself. I just hope we can be married very very soon!!!
This little chest was made in my spare time and it was lots of fun but hard to keep secret. It was all made with loving hands so you know that it’s just full of love. I hope you will have lots of things to put in for us in the future & for little Walter Frederick.
I’m awfully sleepy, so I’m going to bed now and have a great big hug & kiss in this letter for you & one in the chest to use when I’m not with you.

• Inconspicuously in one of the rear stalls of the Safeway parking lot may now (while streets are being paved) be seen a large, new, shiny, Hudson sedan, if we dare mention the make. This has been proven beyond the shadow of a doubt to be the recently purchased property of Past President Hoyt. F. Martin.66
• He was in ROTC, and he went to Camp Lewis up in Washington, I guess it was. He was always big for the army, and then, later, he went into the California National Guard, I think they called it. He loved that, and he stayed in that until they wanted...oh, he was a Colonel, he finally worked up to a Colonel, and then they wanted him to take charge of something down in San Diego.64
• In South Pasadena, see that’s where we lived, in South Pasadena. And he was very involved in this California Reserve, and finally, when they wanted him to go to San Diego, he had to drop out. He didn’t want to move ever. He loved that house.
M: But I thought you owned two houses?
We built another house, yes, and I urged him to do that, yes, because I wanted a smaller house and that was going to be our old age house. We could live there the rest of our lives. And we liked that house. But then, after Auntie Kris was in the earthquake (1971), over in Valencia where they lived and their house was badly damaged by the earthquake, they had to fix it up, but it still scared them to death, they wanted to move back to South Pasadena, and I found this house on Milan where they could have the front and we could have the little rear house...remember the house on Mound?...ahh, Milan, I get Mound and Milan mixed up, because we lived on Mound first when we first married. It was Milan. And so we lived there about three years I think.64
• Hoyt died while we were touring in Israel. We learned of his death upon telephoning home from Paris just prior to departure to the states. Gretchen had a premonition that this might happen; Flossie decided not to spoil our trip and saved the news until the last moment.

Private funeral services have been held for Hoyt Fellows Martin, a former long-time South Pasadena resident and practicing physician.
Martin was born and educated in Pasadena. He died Monday in Altadena after suffering several strokes. He was 80.
He married Florence Hawkins in 1929 and they lived in South Pasadena until 1972 when they retired. The couple had lived in Lake Arrowhead the last 13 years. He was a life member of the Los Angeles County Medical Association, a past president of the South Pasadena Kiwanis Club International; past master of the South Pasadena Masonic Lodge, and a member of the Gnome Club of Caltech.
He is survived by his wife; a sister, Doris Atwell of Altadena; two daughters, Kris Schuehle of La Canada Flintridge and Gretchen Mills of San Marino and five grandchildren.67

Highlight of Sunday’s party was a very special scrap book.
The Martin’s other daughter, Gretchen Mills of San Marino, sent letters to 80 Martin friends asking them to send back a letter with picture that recalled a favorite memory of something they had shared with the Martins.
Kris reports that the golden two stayed up half the night reading their scrapbook following a gourmet dinner featuring chicken and ham rolls covered with cheese and wine sauce.93
