• I've spent a little time looking through some of our materials:
In a book on Anthony history (1972), I found a list of Anthony residents as of 1885. In it is listed, “Merril, Ed; merchant." This is a different spelling, but I would speculate that the difference occurred in transcription from the original source. This would indicate that Mr. Merrell was here even earlier than you thought.
In the November 29, 1887 issue of the Anthony Republican, there is a box ad which reads:
"Blinds have been pulled down on prices of Curtains at Merrell & Darling's Furniture store, and are now being sold regardless of cost. Call early and get a bargain."
In the January 14, 1888, issue of the same newspaper is the following:
"A day or so ago, Mr. Wonner, of the Arcade Bakery, after procuring two hundred dollars of his son Charles, started for Wichita and having taken a drink from a bottle tendered him by a stranger, was drugged and robbed. When he came to his senses he was in a strange house in Wichita, his watch and every dollar was gone and he was penniless in the city. He ran across E.G. Merrell at the Occidental and told him the story, and that gentleman provided for his immediate wants and brought word home to his son Charles, who forwarded funds necessary for his father. The loss was a severe one."
In the process of looking for something else, I found this large ad in a December 31, 1897 newspaper:
E.G. Merrell & Co.
TWENTY YEARS' EXPERIENCE in the Furniture Market of this country has convinced us that the way to sell goods is first to buy them right and the selling part is easy--but really is it easy?
Ask that Caravan of Buyers who are loading wagons six days in the week in front of our stores what object they have in coming from 30 to 60 miles to buy furniture, they will tell you their neighbors advised them to do so.
Sell Goods Right---Treat People Right---and give them the qualities--they buy--that settles your success.
We are in business to make Friends and Money and are well satisfied with our success in both. When you need anything in our line of...
Furniture, Carpets, Lamps, Bicycles, Picture Frames, Portieres, Window Shades, Children's_______, Pianos, Organs, Carriages, and last of all Undertaking Supplies.
Any or all goods sold by us if not as represented will be made good if returned at once. Call and see us.
