• From a record kept by William Sizer the eighth son of Anthony, we learn that Anthony Sizer was undoubtedly of French parents, although born in another kingdom. This is shown by his complexion and particularly by his original name, which was not Sizer but Anthony De Sosieur, or spelled De Yosieur.
He was a seaman and had a desire to see North America, so shipped on board a vessel bound to Boston -- Henshaw, commander.
He arrived at Boston about May 1st, 1726, and was then 19 years of age. He went from Boston up the Connecticut River to Middletown. It was soon after this that he met Sarah Tyron, daughter of Abel Tyron, a wealthy farmer.
He was advised, says his son William, to have his name put into English, so he went to Deacon Rockwell, then town clerk, in Middletown and left it to him to “English” his name and record it; which he did, by calling it “Sizer,” instead of De Sosieur, and from that day to this, Anthony and his posterity have gone by the English name “Sizer.” Anthony’s son, William, said there were no other by that name in America, nor in the world, so Anthony became the progenitor of all people by that name in America, thus the whole Sizer family originated with this Frenchman, whose French name was De Sosieur.
Anthony never visited his native land, and became a loyal citizen of America.3225
