Individual Notes
• It now appears that most of those of that name [Rayburn] are descended from Joseph who arrived in Virginia in 1698.
The name is spelled in many ways but all spellings seem to trace back to the same ancestry. Even the Rabuns and Rabons of the Carolinas and further South are probably of the same stock.1281

• Joseph, the reputed first immigrant, arrived in 1698 from Staffordshire, England as a bound servant to one Bryan Blundell of Virginia. Diligent research has found nothing more regarding him until his large family appears in the records of Augusta County. Tradition implies a family of about 6 or 7 children but we are certain of only James and Angy.1281

• He sailed from Liverpool to Virginia on August 27, 1698. At an unknown date prior to 1698, his parents, himself and possibly other children sailed from an unknown port in Ireland, bound for an unknown port in England, where they were going to board another ship for America. During the voyage, the ship sank and the entire family, except Joseph, was lost. His age at that time in unknown. Then, in 1698, he is listed as being from Waser, in Staffordshire, near the west coast of England and is apprenticed to Bryan Blundell as a shoemaker for five years making him 16 years old at that time. If he had relatives in Waser, or if this orphaned boy was taken in by some kind family, is not known. Thought to have had 6 or 7 children.3826
