• One of the earliest settlers in Cape May, New Jersey, was Joseph Whilldin and his wife, Hannah Gorham, who left Yarmouth, in Barnstable County, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod, and settled in Cape May about 1689.1382
General
• Whalers from Long Island and New England settled permanently on the Delaware Bay at Portsmouth (Town Bank), Cape May County, New Jersey, late in the 17th century. Later the site of the settlement was inundated by waters from the bay and the town was moved to higher ground.1382
