Individual Notes
• The first Martin in our line to “come over” was Richard, who had been disinherited by his wealthy Irish parents for marrying a Catholic girl.
The young couple made the perilous journey by sea in 1740, bringing with them their son William, six weeks of age.
We believe they settled in the colony of New York, making their living by farming in Dutchess County (Hudson River area). Two daughters were added to the household, one of them named Sarah.135

• James, or Richard, Martin (Mother is not quite positive as to the name) being disowned by his parents for marrying a Catholic girl, took his wife, and little babe, named William, then six weeks old, and left his home in the north of Ireland and came to America.316

• Richard – son of wealthy Irish parents – married Catholic girl, was for it disinherited and came to America, New York, in 1740. Brought one child six weeks of age, his name William, who married Phebe Everett.4939

• Richard Martin, 13 July 1764, son, William, to care for his mother, who is to have personal property. Legaris to daughter Sarah and to an unnamed daughter. Son, William, residuary legatee, Trustees and executor. Witness Robert Kean, Henry Martin, and William Martin.133
Research
• Regarding the Martin family you do not appear to have any idea of where Richard was born in Ulster circa 1710-15. The best way of proceeding in this case would be for us to compile a list of all those parishes in which the surname occurred in the various County Hearthmoney Rolls. The surname is quite rare and hopefully the list of parishes would be small enough to allow individual searches of the extant registers for Richard's baptism.3537
