• I have been twice married. I got a girl from old Yorkshire by the name of Dinah Lumley, a very industrious woman. She lived about ten years with me and then died of dropsy. We had two children when she left me, a boy and a girl. After that I married another prudent young woman [Charlotte Mills] from the state of New York. A very industrious helpmeet, and by her I have six children, three boys and three girls, which makes ten in family.1840
