Rick's paternal grandfather was Karl Martin Monson of Heldal, Norway. When Karl arrived in the USA, it seems his name was misunderstood, somewhat Americanized and ultimately recorded as Carl Martin Heldal. The Monson was lost forever for Carl and his line. Rick's father, Martin, changed the spelling to Hildal in the 1930's as he didn't like the reference to "hell." It seems that Carl Martin Hildal’s siblings successfully retained Monson as their last name, and with this they have been difficult to locate. I am hoping that the DNA test Rick completed through MyHeritage may reveal some Monson connections.34
